Maternal, Meat, Marbling

Managing for profit is the bottom line, and always has been, but somewhere the importance of predictability and uniformity was lost. Together with carcass quality, these are again recognized as the two most important economic traits by the feedlot operator, the packer, and the grocery retailer. Nevertheless, it is absolutely necessary that you design your breeding program to be as efficient and profitable as possible.

Our Foundation

West Star Herefords purchased at private treaty a large group of some of the top cows in the breed from Camco Herefords in the winter of 1987. Being one of the first herds in this part of the country to recognize the importance of genetics, led us to the famous Camco herd in New Mexico. These cows added the genetically stacked pedigrees with eye-appeal and a maternal look with emphasis on milk, meat, muscle, pigment, small teats, performance and predictable genetics. Through our embryo transplant program, we have utilized only the top individuals that possess these most important traits.

Here at West Star, we believe in these principles, and have built our program around several of the top cow families in the breed. We believe in compounding tremendous cows in our pedigrees. Most of the herd traces back to the 610 cow and are descendants of the 386 bull.
